Off Beaten India- Birdwatching at Keoladeo National Park

One of my fondest memories in India was a refreshing morning at Keoladeo National Park while watching birds and riding a bike in the park. I’d recommend this to nature lovers, or tourists who want a break from Indian chaos.

The Keoladeo National Park is situated between Agra and Jaipur. The park is at a town called Bharatpur, accessible by train. It’s also possible to get there by taxi from Agra.

Travel Tips

Best time to visit is October to April, when there are more migratory birds.Entrance Fee: Rs.400 for foreigners.

Guide:Rs.150 per hour (for group less than 5 people). A naturist with a telescope+tripod charges Rs.400 per hour.

Rickshaw: Rs.100 per hour (for 2 persons)

Bicycle: …. I think Rs.100 per day?

Exploring the park by bike is probably the best way to visit the park. (The other way is to hire a rickshaw..) The park opens at 7am (confirm this when you reach Bharatpur), so get there early. Also, it’s good to get there early as there are only a few good bikes for rent.

It’s truly pleasant and surprising to see what the park has.

The highlight of this park is the number of birds you are likely to see

The advantage of having a naturist is that he knows where to find these birds, many can’t even be noticed by naked eyes. (Just a shadow in the distance… unless you look through his lens)

The park has beautiful nature, it’s very relaxing to enjoy the nature!

Oh! And there are animals too!

Other Tips

There’s a small cafe inside the park, but you’d only get snacks there. You can bring your own food to the park. And for us, we stayed from 9:30 to 12:30. There were more birds before 10:30am.

Finally, it’s also possible to explore the park on your own. Here’s the map of the park. It’s easy to explore the park and difficult to get lost. Although, if you want to see more birds, I’d still recommend taking a naturist with you 🙂
