If you’ve been to New Delhi for a few times and get a bit tired of all the Indian spices and chaos, or if you are feeling homesick or need a little bit of peace of mind (and preferably with non-stop air-conditioned room), then the good news is TGI Fridays Restaurant has come to India! I think there’s no need to explain what TGI Fridays offers, but the question lies, can the brand deliver what it promises in South Asia too? And especially in a challenging economy like India? Will its strategy target on high-end consumer bracket (the educated ‘elite’ class), or will it try to focus on the middle class? And will it be affordable to a backpacker’s budget? Let’s see!
TGI’s Location in New Delhi
TGI Fridays restaurant can be found in 4 locations in New Delhi. They are also expanding to other cities in India, you can check: store locater
I found the store in Saket to be the most convenient one to visit, it’s located in DLF Courtyard, right next to Select Citywalk. As you reach ‘Saket Mall Metro’, take a auto-rickshaw there for Rs.50, or walk 1.5km (not recommended but doable).
You can enjoy shopping in Select Citywalk, watch a movie, or go to bookshops here. In general Select Citywalk is fancier, there are international brands like Nike, Adidas, Zara, Mango etc.
But then, there’s a food plaza in DLF courtyard where you’d find Mcdonald’s, subway, Domino’s and many other local brands. Behind the food plaza is where TGI Fridays restaurant located.
The Indian Version of TGI?
Nah, the decoration is just like any TGI Fridays in the world! Their waiters were always smiling (although usually slow).
I’ve been to this store for 3 times, and I always ordered from the 2-course lunch menu. It’s available only on Monday to Friday from noon to 5pm only! The 2-course lunch comes with unlimited drink! And lunch choices include a main dish and appetizer/salad/soup/dessert (choose 1).
The Meals
I really like their Lime Cilantro Chicken Salad! So refreshing! This salad can already be a light lunch!
Santa Fe Blackened Cheese Tacos. I think it is no longer on their new menu now..
For main dish, I was happy to have Tall Boy Burger! It’s a steal!
Garlic Chicken Pasta. It was alright. The chicken strip ingredient is the same as in salad. And pasta was very spicy.
You can also pay Rs.60 more for premium items! My mom likes fish, so she ordered the only fish item ‘Portuguese Baked Fish‘ (premium item)… it’s alright, not very good, but not bad. Another premium item- New York Hot Pepper Chicken.
For dessert, I’ve tried their Brownie & Ice Cream. It was good, but as I’m not a big eater, I had to ask them to pack it for me.
And see what I got in return…. It’s crazy! There’s only a tiny brownie inside… But of course I like their bag!
After sales tax and service charges (around 28% in total), the actual cost for 2-course meal was around Rs.260 ($4). It’s insanely cheap!! Any chicken handi in ‘backpacker’s slum’ Paharganj would cost me Rs.300 already!
You can click here to see their most updated 2-course lunch menu in 2018, it’s still about $4! http://tgifindia.com/lunch-platters/
