After an overnight train, and a bus ride, I arrived Khiva.
According to legend, Khiva was founded about 2 500 years ago when a son of Noah, Shem, discovered a well in the middle of the desert exclaimed “Khi-wa!” (which locals will take delight in roughly translating as “sweet water”). (Wikitravel)
I didn’t plan to come to Khiva, because it’s really far away and I only had 8 days in Uzbekistan. However, I didn’t regret the decision of coming here. I thought it’d be just like another city like Samarkand or Bukhara which I already saw, but Khiva definitely has her unique charm.
The Old Town of Khiva has many historical sites. This is a map of Khiva.
We didn’t have a plan, so here’s what we saw.
And there was a tower which you could go up to have a view.
There are shops and buildings open for visitors. The whole city is like an open air museum.
And ancient music notes. Can you read it?
There are various spots which amaze you with delicate designs.
And it’s quite atmospheric to have meals in Khiva!
Before coming, Khiva looked very dull to me from the pictures. But when I got here, I liked the monotone and the old feel of this city. And apparently, the locals love it too. I saw 3 brides in just 6 hours!
I’d recommend 1-2 days in Khiva!
