Not every country has a beautiful old town that’s so well preserved like Stockholm’s. And when you think of Stockholm, Gamla Stan will definitely come to your mind. The history of Gamla Stan can be traced back to 13th century. Some streets are cobblestoned and they look as medieval as it can get!
The architecture there is influenced by North-Germanic style. It is simply pleasant to walk around…if the weather isn’t too cold.
Here’s what you can do there:
1. Find the smallest alley called Jarntorget, which is only 90cm wide.
2. Attend a free walking tour at 4pm everyday.
Usually you need to tip a minimum of 25kr per person $3.
3. Have ice cream in the cafe of Nobel Museum.
The ice cream is different every year, and you will taste exactly the same flavor of what was served last year on the Nobel Prize Banquet. (Yay?) Ice cream is for about 70kr ($9), and entrance to the museum is probably 50kr.
4.Sit in a cafe on Stortorget square, and relax.
5. Go for souvenir shopping.
6. Continue No.5, but get lost while doing so.
7. Visit Storkykan (for a small fee), or any church.
8. Watch the change of guard at 1:30pm for free… and visit Kungliga Slottet the Palace for a fee.
9. Take a ferry from here to another island…Djurgarden.
10. Make a new friend. Haha!
I hope you will enjoy your time there! I went in the beginning of June and it was around 12 degrees. It was cold for me so most of time I felt sleepy and tired. And I didn’t do as much as I wished. But I enjoyed Gamla Stan very much 🙂
