What’s Your Impression of Tashkent? (A Former Capital of Soviet Central Asia)

Just so you know one day I’ll come back to this post and explain Tashkent’s history. I didn’t expect much from Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan. But I heard about it being clean and it is the only ‘stan’ that has a underground subway.

This was however the impression I got: Very green, friendly+sort of modern young people, and tulips! This can be in any European city (Amsterdam?)! I can’t believe the first tulips I’ve seen in my life are in Uzbekistan!

I enjoyed my visit to the Independence Square. (Mustakillik Square)

The park is very neat. But most importantly, I found out that women here can work and girls can wear skirts. They are probably college or university students. And apparently, they love heels!

Though Uzbekistan has its independence, I felt strong Soviet influence on this city. Tashkent is very neat and clean to me. The underground (see top right of the picture below) is clean, safe, and cheap. Roads are wide and organized. And the city is surprisingly green.

White cars and black suits.

Soviet style building.

Near the theatre and opera theatre.

Even street stalls are very organized.

They don’t have a real burger king, but Subway is real.

This is in a different neighborhood (not in the central of Tashkent). Still very clean.

I saw a beautiful Tashkent. Did this surprise you?
