A Day in Snæfellsjökull National Park, Iceland

Travel Date:2015/6/20 Location:Reykjavik-Snæfellsjökull National Park-Olafsvik

Besides Jokulsarlon Lagoon and the Golden Circle, the under-rated Snæfellsjökull National Park is a place I’d recommend if you have time. It’s within reach from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, and it has many beautiful sites including beach, volcano covered with a glacier, lava formation and hidden waterfall. Come with a rented car, and enjoy a beautiful day!

So, I passed through Akranes and Borgarnes quickly, and then I had to stop when I saw this.

Arnarstapi

As it was just my second day in Iceland, I was amazed!

There were some buildings (I knew one was a cafe, the red one here was empty).

If you walk further, you’d see Bardur sculpture. It was left as a mark by the settlers as something… anyways, not a must see. If this will come as the end of your Iceland tour, then there’s nothing to see in Arnarstapi (my honest opinion).

Londrangar

I thought these people found puffins! So I was extremely excited!

Despite the fact that these birds weren’t puffins (then why did those people with gigantic cameras shooting these birds?)

This place has beautiful cliffs (obviously not as impressive as Latrabjarg where I saw puffins), and it’s certainly stunning

You’d find yourself enjoying fresh air and remoteness.

There are a few walks available here, even though I didn’t go to any.  If you have time, go for it!

Djúpalónssandur

My last stop before calling a day… well, it’s a bunch of weird looking rocks, and a rocky beach.

The beauty of it was there was no one there for the 30 minutes I was there! It’s just you having a dialogue with the nature.

Or having a dialogue with our Creator God.

After this site (again, there are more tracks available if you have time to explore), I headed to Olafsvik. The sun doesn’t set till 12am in summer!

It’s an enjoyment to hit the road. What an amazing country!

Olafsvik

This is where I camped for the night. The town is beautiful although the campsite was very basic.

Transportation

As it’s part of my 14-day driving trip in Iceland, this is basically my day 2 itinerary. The agenda is clear and simple:

Reykjavik (A) -Akranes- Borgarnes-Arnarstapi -Londrangar– Djúpalónssandur -Olafsvik (J)

Total Driving Distance/Time: 313km/ 4 hours 15 minutes

Olafsvik is where we camped for the night that night. Hellissandur (I) is another campsite before reaching Olafsvik, but I can’t say if it’s better.

Tip:

There are many attractions and walking trails in this park. Ideally camping here for 2 nights will be better, but I didn’t know…. I left Reykjavik at 9am and arrived Olafsvik at 7pm. This means 10 hours isn’t enough because I had to skip a few spots. And honestly, if you see there’s an attraction sign, go for it! It might not be mentioned on your tour book, but just stop and explore 🙂
