Backpacking in Helsinki- Travel Expenses for 2 Days

Helsinki was more or less a stopover for us between Stockholm and Saint Petersburg, and between Saint Petersburg and Tallinn. I purposely planned it like this. Each of us spent $12.8 per day in Helsinki.

Our daily expenditure does not include the transportation cost to go to that place or to leave that place. As we stayed on 4 different ferry ships, hence there is no accommodation cost in our daily expenditure .

This average is really cheap and it even includes $4.05 for buying souvenir. But since you might use this budget for taking public transportation (we only bought a day pass for one day, and the other day we walked with our luggage to save 3 euros for each person….)

We didn’t have the time to eat in a restaurant as we had to depart at 4pm and 6pm on those two days by ferry. We didn’t eat the fish soup at the market near the port either. It was 7 euros for a bowl. It seemed expensive at that time, and when we returned from saint Petersburg, we had cooked salmon with us and hence it did not appeal to us.

And most attraction (churhes) were free. Suomenlinna is free too to just walk around without a tour. The Espandi park is also free. So it seems like everyone can easily visit Helsinki without having to worry about the expenditure.

If I could choose again, I would like to stay at least one night in Helsinki and spend a day in the countryside. I don’t think finding a couchsurfing host will be difficult in Helsinki. And I think the cost for public transportation will not significantly change my daily average.

Well I didn’t have time this time because I gave it to the Baltics. And ironically I spent more in the Baltics because we ate out a few times and shopped more there.
