We travelled as a group of 4 adults (family). Each of us only spent $17.8 per day when we were in Stockholm.
Transportation
When I planned for my trip, I decided that Stockhom card is expensive and it doesn’t appeal to me.
I was more interested in their forest, designs, and food. So the first thing became clear that I didn’t need a Stockholm card. And then how many days should I stay in Stockholm? It seems to me most people stay for 4 days. And it makes sense, as you either get a 24hr travel card, or a 72-hr one. So staying 4 days (I know 72 hours doesn’t mean 4 days, but you can just buy an extra ticket for the extra hours if you need).
This includes ferry to Djurgarden (where Skansen is), your transportation to/from the airport, and all zones in Stockholm. I’ve calculated a couple of times, and this is well worth it. Even in the end I only stayed in Stockholm for 3 days (roughly 51 hours only), I still found this travel card very good for value.
Accommodation
And we couchsurfed for two nights. Our host cooked dinner for us once, and invited us for breakfast.
And well, I don’t think it is hard to find a couchsurfing host in Stockholm. The Swedes are hospitable and friendly and very cool people. And $20 (or less) should be sufficient as your daily budget. Try to stay more than 3 nights there. It is an amazing capital and intersting to roam around.
Food
Supermarkets can be easily found in Stockholm. There is always something on discount (like 3 big pastries for 20kr) So food cost is not to be worried. We had a sushi buffet lunch in the city center.
Other
And we also paid to store all our luggage (at Ahlens).
Because we were couhsurfing, we had to store our luggage somewhere for our last day. We found Ahlens to be an excellent place to store luggage which we only paid 100kr ($11.8) altogether (for 5 lockers).
Entertainment
Still, each of us only spent $53.5 for three days! How did we do it?
Well, we took the advantage of getting to the city from the airport by getting to another bus station first, so that the fare is covered in the 72 hours travel card.
The main thing is attraction cost, which we didn’t have any. We didn’t go to Skansen. Why? I don’t know, it doesn’t attract me that much. I liked Gamla Stan and even the changing of the guards.
I wasn’t asking much from Stockholm other than the atmosphere, and design.
And as a matter of fact, Stockholm is my favourite capital comparing to Oslo, Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Helsinki.
