How to Pick a Travel Buddy #1 (From a Christian Point of View)

There are benefits to travel solo, with the most obvious one being the freedom.

Yes, you can sleep till noon and no travel buddy is going to complain about you wasting time.

However, at least for me, traveling can be more meaningful when you do it with a good friend, or an intimate partner, or with family even.

Why?

You share the highlights and special moments with them

…which you might forget as time goes by. But it is good if there’s someone who can put the puzzle back.

You learn to take care of each other in uncomfortable environment.

….which can be the time when you are sick, or your travel buddy is sick. And while you realize how vulnerable you are, you will also notice how lucky you’ve been to have that ‘someone’ with you on the trip, and all those years before the trip too.

So, since Jesus is obviously my best travel buddy, here’s the #1 quality a travel buddy must have:

Turning Water into Wine

or it means, a person who is willing to get involved in the situation, pay effort to help, and enjoy the outcome with you.

Here’s a scenario,

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.  When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.

Imagine yourself being in a destination, perhaps the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, where you’ve dreamed to be for a long time, but well, something unexpected happens… the Blue Lagoon is under maintenance for that month (just as an example). But you’ve planned for it. Suppose you decided to go to Iceland because you saw how mysteriously beautiful the Blue Lagoon looks. Then what?

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Jesus was willing to get involved, and changed the scenario and made everyone happy. Even though he might have valid reasons not to help (Why? Because his hours had not come yet? Because the first sign for Jesus’ new career as Rabbi was important?”

So that’s it, find a person who is willing to help, and make you happy even when he isn’t the responsible one. Find someone who doesn’t complain and has a knack for turning the unfavorable situation to a good one that everyone loves to remember and talk about. And most importantly, find someone who can gracefully drink that choice wine with you, and celebrate the good hours with you.

Don’t find a travel buddy who turns wine into water! Haha!
