Old and New Churches From Hvammstangi to Akureyri- Þingeyrar, Blönduóskirkja and Glaumbær

This is not an important part of my trip, however I’d like to share it with people who are looking for stops driving between Hvammstangi (the seal colony) and Akureyri (the second biggest city in Iceland).   These stops are Þingeyrar, Blönduóskirkja, Víðimýrarkirkja and Glaumbær

Þingeyrarkirka

Now there’s an old stone church built in 1877 called Þingeyrarkirkja (Thingeyrar Church).  Before the church was built this place had the first monastery in Iceland, and many sagas talked about this place.

It’s a short detour from the road to Akureyri, but it’s acceptable. The tourist information has free washroom and a small exhibition.  I saw an old Icelandic Bible, which is pretty cool!

The essence of the church is its interior with an old pulpit from Holland. To enter the church, there’s a fee of something like 800kr. Take a peak of what’s inside here: https://guidetoiceland.is/connect-with-locals/regina/the-historical-ingeyrarkirkja-church-in-north-iceland

Blönduóskirkja

It’s a beautiful and modern looking church. It certainly looks like a spaceship.

It’s really cool to have a place to worship like this! I think had there been someone inside the church, I could probably visit the inside!

Víðimýrarkirkja

Víðimýrarkirkja is an old wooden church that I’d really like to see but I didn’t find it. The location on Google map is wrong. Although it must exists somewhere, I didn’t have enough time to search for it.

On tripadvisor forum it says “Close to Varmahlíð. In Skagafjörðu on route 1.” Hopefully you’d have a better luck locating them.

Glaumbær

The old house with grassy ceiling. You can walk around but to enter the house, you’d pay a fee. (Something like 1000 kr).

The trip will take you a good 6 hours. It is a pleasant trip and a necessary route from Hvammstangi to Akureyri. I didn’t plan for enough time on this I had to catch a whale watching trip at Dalvik at 5pm that day, so the trip was a bit rushed.
