Old Hansa? This name sounds so familiar, doesn’t it?
It’s now a medieval restaurant, and the building was actually used as a merchant house during Hanseatic League.
It’s pretty cool actually!
Before going, I read lots of reviews about this place. Most people love the atmosphere of this place but not so much about the food. It isn’t hard to understand why people (locals and tourists) love this place. It’s like an open air museum except better! All the waiters and waitress dress in medieval costumes. They also interact with you in a way as if they live in the medieval time.
When I walked passed it, I wasn’t hungry yet. But a waitress talked to me and invited me to go inside. When I said I wasn’t hungry, she said they also had coffee. So I felt…. why not?
The restaurant is quite dark inside, as they don’t use electricity (they probably do in the kitchen, but you don’t know!)
It was kind of hard to read their menu. But you kind of still want to read it as it’s well designed and cute! And along with cute drawings, you can find some interesting facts about medieval culture.
I glanced through their menu on food section. Well I wouldn’t say it’s entirely ‘expensive’ as I don’t know what those things are. But if you read other people’s reviews, they were not impressed. I don’t know if I’d be impressed or not, but I wasn’t hungry at that time.
And finally, the drinks section. Let me repeat “Coffee is your friend’. I figure if you are here to experience its atmosphere, a cup of coffee would do. You probably don’t need to order a plate of raw meat to enjoy Old Hansa. And while “Olde Hansa Kohv” (Old Hansa Coffee) is for 5.9 euros, you can get regular coffee for 2 euros!
Coffee in 2 euros… it means vendor machine coffee! And sometimes vendor machine sells even more expensive coffee! And if this is not good for value enough… you get to use their washroom for free!
And voila, here comes our coffee. You can see how cool our coffee cups were! And yes, the candle lights! (It was about 12pm though). I asked the waiter if there was WiFi, and he said there’s no WiFi in medieval time. Fair enough.
For its value, atmosphere and free toilet, I can definitely definitely recommend you to come here and have a cup of coffee. It’s truly something special and you don’t have to worry if you’d enjoy medieval food. Medieval coffee was just like regular coffee. Don’t worry!
