The Two Waterfalls and The Golden Circle In a Day!

Between Jokulsarlon and the Golden Circle, there are two waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss that are beautiful, famous and almost a must-see for those who are visiting Iceland. And while Golden Circle is a must-see for tourists, these attractions can be viewed in a day.

So I’m showing how I put this itinerary together in this post. Basically the Golden Circle includes three attractions: Geysir, Gullfoss waterfall, Thingvellir the Parliament Park.

Location

My order (coming from south) was Skógafoss -> Seljalandsfoss -> Geysir -> Gullfoss -> Thingvellir
As these are well-visited attractions, I’m coming to what I think it’s important to know.

Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss

Both Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss are accessible but packed with tourists. It will take you longer to visit Seljalandsfoss if you plan to make a round trip behind the waterfall. In my opinion Seljalandsfoss is prettier, so you’d naturally leave more time here as I did. And I had lunch here (in the car though, haha)

Geysir

In the afternoon I started visiting Geysir.  The parking is not far from the park itself. There are even more tourists there, nevertheless I really like this place. There’s also a info center there that offers free wifi and free exhibition.

Gullfoss

For Gullfoss, just know there are two parking lots. The upper one connects to the gift shop, and gives you a nice lookout. This is from the upper one.
But if you want to see the close-up of waterfall, it’s easier to go from the lower one.
I finished seeing everything before 6pm and went to my campsite near Gullfoss. If you are heading back to Reykjavik, then you can also visit Thingvellir on your way back. But staying neat Gullfoss gave me the opportunity to visit Gullfoss again when weather seemed to improve that evening.
For sure, Gullfoss is on the top of my recommended attraction list! The volume of water is quite impressive!

Thingvellir

About Thingvellir, I think if you aren’t particularly interested in history, the place isn’t special nor fun. It’s not easy to park the car there (as it’s flooded with tourists!!) and it’s a long walk from parking to the viewpoint (okay.. not that long. It’s about 5-10 minutes but it’s not so rewarding). So unless you have time, there are more interesting attractions!

 Enjoy your trip!
