One thing that left an impression to me about Riga was this bizarre style of art. I saw stood out from was this crazy art. I like architecture in general, although I know little about the terms or styles. From my understanding, Art Nouveau has various names and various shapes. It started in the late 19th century. And since it’s name pretty say it all, it’s a style of new or modern art that’s not been done before. And it’s applied not only on architecture but also paintings.
So, as a tourist, to me it was a bunch of cool buildings done by professional architects with funky taste. You could also listen to Amateur Traveller’s episode on Riga. It also talked about this crazy architect who designed these buildings as a habit.
So, these were the buildings that I saw…. in 45 minutes I think!
Can you see the two faces on top of this building?
And the two faces on the pillars. I wonder what they meant.. (to scare people away?)
And a close up of a building.
A building with lion and a bunch of sad faces.
A lady, lots of faces and a bird. So random.
Another beautiful building with statues of people.
And a close-up of a building. Yeah, both women and men are laborers.
This is the building. Lots of people were carrying the building I guess.
So yes, walk around the Art Nouveaux area in Riga. You’ll discover more interesting buildings.
Where Is Art Nouveau?
It’s not in the old town (obviously). It”s a 20 minutes walk from the Riga Cathedral to the area where Art Nouveau buildings are.
In this first picture below, you can see it’s right under the Facebook logo (the one with a mask that says 16).
And the location of it it’s not even in this map. (See the two green parks on the top right in the map below? And do you see two green parks on the bottom in the map above? The two parks are the same.)
Great post! I recently visited Riga for the first time and I absolutely loved the city, especially the Art Nouveau district!
I actually wrote a post for my blog about the 48 that I spent there. Please feel free to take a look and let me know what you think! 🙂
